Welcome to the Zegarra-Ruiz Lab!

Mission Statement

The Zegarra-Ruiz Lab in the Beirne B. Carter Immunology Center at the University of Virginia is dedicated to advancing our understanding of autoimmune pathogenesis by identifying the environmental triggers and immune players that mediate the interactions between gut microbiota and autoimmunity. Through this research, we aim to gain insights into how gut microbes influence systemic adaptive responses, ultimately contributing to the development of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Our mission is clear: to refine the way we approach disease development and therapeutics by uncovering the intricate relationship between gut microbiota and autoimmune pathogenesis.

Further, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of diversity and inclusion, fostering a positive research and career development environment for our team members. Through collaboration, dedication, and cutting-edge research, we strive to make meaningful contributions to the fields of microbiology and immunology.

Vision Statement

The Zegarra-Ruiz Lab is dedicated to advancing the fields of microbiome research and autoimmunity. Our vision is to leverage these cutting-edge disciplines as a catalyst for transformative change, ultimately leading to the development of innovative therapies that address and mitigate medical disparities in autoimmunity.

    Primary Goals
  1. Elucidate the role of thymic pathobiont-specific T cells in lupus
  2. Unravel the interplay between intestinal dysbiosis and lupus
  3. Identify microbiome changes and microbiota-reactive T cells in SLE
