Welcome to the Zegarra-Ruiz Lab!

Mission Statement

Our mission is to understand how gut microbes and environmental cues influence systemic immune responses and contribute to autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). By identifying key microbial triggers and immune pathways, we aim to redefine our understanding of and approach to treating autoimmunity.
We are equally committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative environment that supports the growth of future leaders in immunology and microbiome research.

Vision Statement

To transform lupus care and reduce health disparities by revealing how microbiota and environment-driven immune circuits lead to autoimmunity, and by translating these insights into innovative therapies.

Research Areas

  1. Diet & Inflammation — Investigate how diets modulate systemic autoimmunity.
  2. Intestinal Barrier & Dysbiosis — Identify defects that promote gut microbial imbalances and their consequences in lupus.
  3. Microbial Translocation — Define how gut microbes reach systemic sites and exacerbate lupus pathogenesis.
  4. Immune Cell Migration — Map gut-derived immune cell trafficking to peripheral organs and their role in disease.
  5. Microbiota-Specific T Cells — Study T cells targeting commensals and pathobionts in autoimmunity.
