Malcolm O’Malley Receives Prestigious NSF Award to Study Heart Disease

Malcolm O’Malley, a second-year graduate student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering advised by Jeffrey Saucerman, PhD, has received a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation (NSF). He is a member of the CIC’s Immunology Training Program, having been supported by the grant during his first year of graduate study. This new, five-year NSF award provides three years of financial support and is one of the most prestigious national graduate fellowships.

Malcolm’s research proposes to develop new treatment options for heart disease by studying the interactions between immune cells, heart cells, and inflammation responses. He will integrate cutting-edge computational models with in-vitro and in-vivo experiments to decode the immune system’s response to cardiac injury.

Malcolm’s research had already caught national attention before being selected for this NSF fellowship. He was featured in an article on the NASA website after he did an internship with the Space Biosciences Research Branch.
