On October 28th, Douglas Green, PhD, Peter C. Doherty Endowed Chair of Immunology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, presented the annual Beirne B. Carter Lecture in Immunology. Dr. Green is an eminent figure in immunology and cell biology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and one of the 100 most-cited scientists of all time. In appreciation for his accomplishments, Dr. Green received a Jefferson Cup. He was hosted by Jie Sun, PhD.
In his talk, “Perchance to Dream: Sleep and Neuroinflammation,” Dr. Green described how an unfortunate case of food poisoning inspired him to explore a deceptively simple question: “Why do we sleep when we get sick?” His team’s search for answers incorporates RNA sequencing, animal model development, and imaging.
A reception in Pinn Hall followed the talk.
