Research Interests

Immune mechanisms of pathogenic antibody production in allergy and autoimmunity

Research Description

CURRENT PROJECTS:
- Using mouse genetics to identify the susceptibility factors that control B cell tolerance, differentiation and survival, leading to autoantibody production.
- Defining the mechanisms by which autoimmune susceptibility elicits inflammation and recruitment of innate immune cells in secondary lymphoid organs that affect B cell function.
- Characterizing the regulation and activity of extracellular vesicles derived from B cells to control autoimmune responses.
- Characterizing the development and persistence of IgE antibodies to food allergens using red meat allergy as a model system.

Personal Statement

The Erickson laboratory studies the host immune response in autoimmunity both in experimental mouse models of lupus and in human lupus patients. Most of our efforts have focused on the response of B cells in lupus and the signals that affect B cell tolerance and the differentiation and survival of autoreactive memory B cells and plasma cells. While much of the focus of our research has been on the development of pathogenic IgG-producing B cells we have recently broadened our horizons to examine mechanisms underlying antibody production in two areas: 1) Investigating the immunophenotypes of B cells that produce pathogenic IgE in allergy since little is known about the origin and mechanisms of tolerance of IgE antibodies. 2) Investigating the role that extracellular vesicles derived from B cells may play in immune protection and disease, such as lupus and allergy. We have extensive experience with in vivo mouse models, working with human specimens, and functional analyses of mouse/human B cells.
