Dr. Victor Engelhard received his BS in Biochemistry from Rice University and his MS and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois. He completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard with Dr. Jack Strominger, where he became interested in antigen presentation. He is currently a Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia. He has trained over 65 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scientists and received both the Robert J Kadner Distinguished Teaching Award (2008) and the David A. Harrison Distinguished Educator Award (2006). Dr. Engelhard has served as Leader of the Immunology and Immunotherapy Program, Co-director of the Human Immune Therapy Center, Director of the Carter Center for Immunology Research and Director of the Immunology Training Program and PI of its NIH-sponsored Training Grant. The work of his laboratory over the last 40 years has been broadly concerned with the recognition of antigens by CD8 T lymphocytes. His research led to insights regarding tumor-derived antigens, cancer immunology, peripheral tolerance, T cell trafficking and secondary lymphoid organ development, and his research activities have resulted in >200 peer-reviewed and invited publications.
